The book is a carefully researched historical novel, exploring on the competing forces of enlightenment⁣ and reactionary darkness and their impact on the Czarist court around the end of the 19th and beginning of the twentieth century. In particular it focuses on one particular figure, the highly reactionary Constantin Pobedonostsev, advisor to three czars and influential in church and state alike, the ‘Mephistopheles’ of the title.
